How can we keep family devotions short and real with children?
Ten minutes, one short passage, one question and a simple prayer. Match the length to your youngest child's attention span.
Keep them short and keep them honest. Children remember the warmth of the moment more than the content. Ten minutes is plenty for most families.
A simple pattern
- Read. A few verses or a story from a children’s Bible.
- Ask. One question: what did you notice? Who was brave?
- Share. A high and a low from the day.
- Pray. Everyone who wants to says one sentence.
Keep it real
Let children see you admit mistakes and ask for forgiveness. Welcome hard questions, even ones you can’t answer. Saying “I don’t know, let’s find out” teaches humility.
Fit it to your home
Breakfast, bath time or the car all work. Skip a night when everyone’s exhausted. Consistency over weeks matters more than any single evening.
See bringing children along, or read praying as a couple.
