How do we start praying together as a couple?
Keep it short, pick a regular moment and use simple words. Taking turns or praying a familiar prayer can ease the awkwardness.
Start small and keep it regular. Many couples find praying together feels more exposed than any other conversation. That’s normal. The goal is closeness to God and each other, not eloquence.
Ways to begin
- Pick a moment. Before a meal, before sleep or on the drive to church.
- Use a familiar prayer. The Lord’s Prayer said together is a gentle start.
- Take turns. One prays tonight, the other tomorrow.
- Share one request each. Then pray for each other’s request.
If it feels awkward
Hold hands and pray silently for a minute, then say amen together. Over time, words come more easily. Thank God for one thing about your spouse; it’s hard to stay distant after that.
If you miss a day
Pick it up again tomorrow. Grace applies here too.
